"I had such a wonderful evening! Andi was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable, friendly, and able to answer every question. Thanks to her translation, I could really interact with the maiko and learn so much about the fascinating world of geishas. It was a rare opportunity to get a glimpse into traditions and everyday life that we otherwise wouldn’t have had access to. The dinner was lovely, and having the maiko perform just for us made the experience even more special and personal. It was also a nice surprise to find out that Andi was a fellow Hungarian! She really made the evening memorable. I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone curious about the geisha world."

THE GUIDE
Choosing a Kyoto Geisha Tour
What each kind of evening gets you, what it costs, and the rules in Gion's lanes.
Geiko is the Kyoto word for a fully trained geisha, and maiko is the apprentice, usually in her late teens, with the trailing obi and the hair ornaments that change with the season. Both belong to one of Kyoto’s five hanamachi, the licensed geisha districts: Gion Kobu, Gion Higashi, Pontocho, Miyagawacho and Kamishichiken up by Kitano Tenmangu. They are working performers of dance, music and conversation, and most of what you can book in Kyoto is a way to spend time with that work without chasing anyone down a lane.
The tours fall into three shapes, and the price gap between them is wide.
A guided walk: from $18
The cheapest way in is a guided evening walk through Gion, where a guide explains the teahouses, the okiya where maiko live and train, and what you are looking at. Stories of Geisha costs from $18 and has 2,412 reviews, and the Magical Night Walk is from $26 with 5,118 reviews (both checked October 2026). You may see a maiko on her way to an engagement, but no walk can promise it, and a good guide will tell you to let her pass.
A seated show: from $49
If you want to be sure of meeting one, book a seated performance. The Meet-and-Greet Maiko Show costs from $49 for 45 minutes (4.8 from 418 reviews), and the 1 Hour Geisha Show is from $54 with 651 reviews and runs an hour to an hour and three quarters. Each has a dance, time for questions and photos. The theatre at Gion Corner is the other route: ¥5,500 at the door, with kyomai danced by maiko as one of seven short pieces.
A geisha dinner: from $255
The full evening is an ozashiki, a dinner with a geiko or maiko in a teahouse. Most teahouses refuse first-time guests without an introduction, so for a visitor the tour is the introduction. Travel Japan Together’s Geisha Dinner & Gion Cultural Walk costs from $255 a person and is rated 4.9 from 128 reviews: a guided Gion walk, two hours of private time with your host, a seasonal kaiseki dinner and unlimited sake. The Geisha & Maiko Dinner is the other one at this level, from $290 (4.9, 73 reviews). Both run about three hours, both cancel free up to 7 days before, and both are small groups, so book them before the rest of your Kyoto days.
The rules in Gion’s lanes
Hanamikoji, the main street through Gion, is public and open. The narrow side lanes off it are mostly private roads. The neighbourhood council put up signs in 2019 banning photography there, with a ¥10,000 fine on the signs, and from April 2024 it asked visitors to stay out of the private lanes altogether. In practice that means: no photos of geiko or maiko without asking, no following, no blocking a doorway. On a tour, your guide knows which streets are open, and the photo time at a show or dinner is offered.
Which one to pick
For a first evening in Kyoto, the seated show is the safe choice: an hour, a fixed price, and a maiko you are sure to meet. If this is the evening of the trip, book the dinner. If your budget is tight, walk Gion with a guide and see the show at Gion Corner the same night. For the background on all of it, read how to see geisha in Kyoto, then check dates for the geisha dinner.

"Taiga, was very helpful and informative. I informed him that I had a disability and he was very conscious of that throughout the tour. Likewise regarding my food allergy and double checked every dish to make sure that it was safe for me to eat. I learnt a lot about Gion and the local culture through him. We went to restaurant in Gion, where we met the Geisha and he also offered to take videos for me. Would definitely recommend."
"The tour was amazing and truely unique. We got to spend a full evening with our Geiko and got a nice tour of the history of Gion and of the Geika / Maika culture. Thank you for an unforgettable experience!"
"Incredible !! The Maiko (Masaya) was very pleasant, eager to answer all of my questions. I really liked that the interaction was also conversational as she took time to ask some questions about myself too. Her being curious makes the whole thing seem even more genuine! I also had the amazing chance to be in the presence of Andi, my amazing tour guide, who was so knowledgeable about everything from the kimono to the history, and eager to answer all questions. This evening will stay one of my dearest memories from this trip. To everyone who made this possible, thank you."
"This was an excelent experience, we started with Gion street walking, we recevied a lot of inside and secret information. After we arrived to the dinner place. Meet with the Geiko (they didn’t use Geisha) was unbeliveable, she join us in the dinner, we could ask her for anything, she gave us a lot of new information about this cultural part of life (way of beeing Maiko and after a hardest way to beeing Geiko). After she presented us two dance, and then we could play with her a specific acient Geiko table play. Dinner was 8 course and it was very delicious. Our tour guide Andrea was professional, we are very lucky to met with she, and speak with her in our native language also."

Kyoto Geisha Tour Questions
Prices, photo rules and what to expect, checked October 2026.
A guided Gion walk costs from $18 (Stories of Geisha), a seated maiko show from $49 (Meet-and-Greet Maiko Show), and a geisha dinner from $255 a person (Geisha Dinner & Gion Cultural Walk). The Gion Corner theatre charges ¥5,500 at the door. All prices checked October 2026.
On the street, it is luck: maiko walk between engagements in Gion in the early evening, but there is no timetable. To be certain, book a show or a dinner, where meeting a geiko or maiko is the point. The 1 Hour Geisha Show (from $54) is the shortest sure way.
In the five hanamachi: Gion Kobu, Gion Higashi, Pontocho, Miyagawacho and Kamishichiken. The public ways in are a teahouse dinner on a tour, a seated show, the Gion Corner theatre, and the districts' spring and autumn dance seasons such as the Miyako Odori.
Yes. Teahouses usually refuse first-time guests without an introduction, which is why tours exist: the geisha dinner and the Geisha & Maiko Dinner provide that introduction, and the guide translates the conversation.
Not on public streets, but it is rude without asking, and Gion's private lanes post a photography ban with a ¥10,000 fine (signs since 2019). Since April 2024 the neighbourhood asks visitors to stay out of the private lanes. At a show or dinner, photos with your host are offered as part of the evening.
Geiko is the Kyoto term for a fully trained geisha. A maiko is an apprentice, usually in her late teens, recognisable by the long trailing obi, her own hair worn up and ornaments that change with the month. Many tours, like the Maiko Show, are hosted by maiko.
On Travel Japan Together's dinner: a guided walk in Gion, then two hours in a private teahouse with a geiko or maiko, a seasonal kaiseki dinner, unlimited sake (soft drinks available), dance, parlour games and photos. It lasts about three hours and can be cancelled free up to 7 days before.
No touching, and no grabbing for a photo. At a dinner or show your host leads the games and the photo time; follow her lead. In the street, give her room and let her pass.
Yes. Kyoto's five hanamachi still train maiko and register geiko through each district's office, and the districts stage public dances every year. Numbers are small, which is part of why dinners book up first.
For a first evening, a seated show such as the 1 Hour Geisha Show ($54). For the evening of the trip, the geisha dinner ($255, 4.9 from 128 reviews). On a budget, the Magical Night Walk ($26) plus the Gion Corner show.
