Building the Gion Evening

A Gion Corner ticket gives the evening a spine - one hour, fixed curtain - and the district supplies everything around it. The structure that works:

Before curtain

Arrive in the district around 16:30. Walk Hanami-koji south from Shijo while the light is still warm - it’s the postcard street, it’s public, and photography is fine here. After the show

Turn north to the Shirakawa canal - lantern light on water, the willows, and the small bridges that hold Kyoto’s most reliably beautiful hundred meters after dark. Dinner afterwards on the Pontocho side keeps the evening walking- distance; Gion’s own dining runs from skewer counters to invitation-only, and the honest rule is that anywhere with an English menu board on Hanami-koji is charging for the address.

The lanes to leave alone
