What You'll Actually Watch

Fifty minutes of seven unfamiliar art forms can blur without a program in hand. Two minutes of reading fixes that; here’s what each segment is and the one thing to watch for in it.

Chanoyu - tea ceremony. Performed on stage while the other arts assemble around it. Watch the economy of movement; nothing the host does is decorative.

Koto. The thirteen-string zither that sounds like water deciding where to go. Its tuning was aristocratic education for centuries.

Ikebana. A flower arrangement built live. The point is the space between stems - Japanese aesthetics in one visible idea.

Gagaku-lineage bugaku. Court dance in extraordinary costume, from a repertoire more than a thousand years old - the oldest continuously performed orchestral tradition on earth.

Kyogen. The comic theatre that historically played between noh pieces. No language needed; the physical comedy was engineered for exactly that.

Kyomai. The reason most seats are filled: Kyoto-style dance performed by maiko of the Gion Kobu district - understated, interior, and the genuine article, on a stage where watching them is the point rather than an intrusion.

Bunraku or noh (seasonal). The rotation slot: half-size puppets operated in plain sight, or the masked drama that influenced everything after it.
